Hopefully you have had the chance to review the first post in this two part series – if not just click here.
If the first four reasons weren’t enough to convince you it’s time to prepare and take your boards – keep reading below:
5. Commitment to Patient Care
By earning your EEG certification, you are also committing to providing the best care for your patients. The process of studying for the board exam and gaining certification ensures that you are up-to-date on the latest technologies, procedures, and best practices in the field.
6. Ongoing Professional Development
The journey doesn’t stop after you pass the board exam. Many certifications require ongoing education to maintain your status. This commitment to continuous learning keeps you at the forefront in the EEG field. It’s essential to stay informed, and certification is a great way to reinforce this habit.
7. Networking and Community
Becoming board-certified opens the door to new networking opportunities within the EEG and healthcare communities. The knowledge you gain while preparing for the exam, coupled with the connections you make, will allow you to grow both personally and professionally.
In Conclusion:
Make the Leap
Taking the EEG board exam is more than just a test — it’s an investment in your future. Certification is a mark that sets you apart, boosts your earning potential, and empowers you to offer even better care to your patients.
The process of preparing for and taking the exam may seem intimidating, but the benefits far outweigh the challenges. It’s an opportunity for you to prove to yourself just how far you’ve come.
If you haven’t already, now is the time to take the leap. Your future self will thank you!
Hopefully you have been following along on the blog and saw the last post about EEG board exam pass rates.
We can talk all day about board prep (and it’s important!) but one of the contributing factors to the low pass rate is the low sample size.
There are not enough people taking the exam.
You already play a crucial role in diagnosing and managing neurological conditions. The work you do can be both challenging and rewarding. If you haven’t already taken the EEG board exam, now is the perfect time to consider it.
1. Enhanced Professional Credibility
Achieving board certification elevates your professional standing in the field. It demonstrates to your employers, patients, and peers that you are committed to the highest standards. Being board-certified adds weight to your resume, showing you have the expertise necessary to provide accurate and reliable testing.
2. Increased Career Opportunities
Being registered can open new doors. Many employers look for technologists who hold board certification because it proves that they have undergone rigorous training and assessment. Being board-certified will make you a more competitive candidate. It also enhances job security. Certified professionals are often preferred when hiring or promoting.
Currently registered technologists are required for patients that have Medicare coverage for reimbursement. Who knows if this is something that the commercial payers will soon require?
3. Personal Growth and Confidence
Taking the board exam and passing it is an accomplishment you can be proud of. It provides a sense of professional growth and achievement, affirming that you have mastered necessary skills and knowledge. Passing the exam boosts your confidence in your role.
4. Opportunities for Higher Pay
In many healthcare environments, board-certified EEG technologists are compensated at a higher rate. Certification is often associated with higher levels of skill and expertise, and many hospitals or clinics offer increased pay to certified staff. Your investment in the exam will not only pay for itself but will lead to long-term financial benefits.
Stay tuned for more reasons for why to test and in the interim scroll back through older posts for Tips and Suggestions on how best to prepare.
Well…like everyone else – I was hoping the drop in the pass rate across all Pathways would be unique to 2023. Unfortunately it looks like it continued in 2024.
The statistics only include first time test takers.
Also, as you can see there are not a lot of people taking the test.
It would be interesting to see if there was a higher success rate for those taking the exam at a testing center vs remotely at home as ABRET mentioned they noticed in 2023.
Hard to believe it’s 2025! If this is your Year to Getting Registered – just a couple quick updates to be on the look out for:
As with previous years there is a new Handbook on the ABRET site and this year they have included some Quick Tips and a more detailed percentage breakdown of the content.
As we head into the New Year…12 months of New Opportunities!
If getting registered in this field has been a goal you have been carrying for awhile now – make strides this upcoming year to push towards finishing.
All it takes is a moment to make the commitment.
Put the following in place and you’ll be surprised at how far this month can take you:
1 – Review the Statistics (ABRET Exam Statistics) – also, be sure to use an in person testing center (ABRET found a higher pass rate from those that used an in-person test center instead of remote in 2023). You.Got.This!
2 – Take a Practice Test – (the best one to take is going to be: ASAP)
2 – Make the Commitment to Test – Candidates have three (3) months from the date they receive the “Eligible to Test” notification to schedule and sit for the examination. Sign Up Here.
3 – Now that you are All In – Review What You Need to Know. Visit the free Resource Library on this website. Use your Practice Test results to guide your preparation.
4 – There are A Ton of Free Resources available to you through search engines – but if you find you need additional support – email me and I would be happy to help (RTompkins@TompkinsAssociates.com)
Everyday we have a decision to either stay where we are or move to an unknown territory.
Choose the latter. Let’s do something everyday to expand our skills …experience new things.
Keep Going – In a Year from now you’ll thank yourself.
So purely coincidental but super fitting that it’s almost Thanksgiving…exactly 5 years ago this week The Neurodiagnostic Niche published it’s first post.
I’d like to start out by saying Thank You. I always consider it a tiny miracle that anyone spends their precious time reading what I write.
The mission for starting the blog was to encourage a community in the world of Neurodiagnostics and with your help it has done just that. Referencing back to one of my favorite quotes:
Learning is an Experience. Everything else is just information. – Albert Einstein
I hope this experience is both beneficial and inspiring and that our dialogue of learning together continues to motivate us all as we continue to navigate through this field.
You can’t really know where you are going until you know where you have been. – Maya Angelou
It’s the 4th quarter in our Year to Getting Registered!
Let’s do a recap of where we have been and finish strong:
Remember the game plan:
Review the Content Outline of the Exam
Print it and Check Off those areas you feel good about.
Highlight your Need to Do’s.
Use your Calendar to Make a Plan to work through the Highlights.
Assess your resources – Do you have what you need?
and Remember:
We memorize what we do repeatedly.
1 – Sign Up to take a practice test this week: ABRET ASAP Practice Test Link Review your results…how prepared are you? What areas do you need to focus on? Think on that for a bit.
2 – Continue collecting your required CEU’s – they are not only required but they are useful. Good information to help you prepare.
Congratulations – You are well on your way to making it happen!

Wherever you are in Your Year to Getting Registered journey….Whether you are at the beginning, somewhere in the middle or are approaching the end….Growth takes effort.
If it’s time you need – you might consider taking a paid day off to study.
If it’s understanding that you are missing – you could consider a tutor or ask a mentor to help.
Or if it’s motivation that you’re lacking – try calculating the pay increase that you could expect from passing your boards and the additional job opportunities that would be available to you.
Putting in the time and effort now will help you quickly enjoy the return on your investment in the future.
It’s August…Summer is wrapping up and the “ber” months of Fall are about to start. You don’t have to be in a hurry.
You still have time – Consistency should be your focus:
Go back and review the Content Outline of the Exam if you haven’t done that in awhile.
Print it and Check Off those areas you feel good about.
Highlight your Need to Do’s.
Use your Calendar to Make a Plan to work through the Highlights.
Assess your resources – Do you have what you need?
